Lions find Wales’ nets

It took six rounds of games but Scotty’s Car Rentals St Andrew Lions finally picked up their first win of the season in astonishing fashion, registering a 2-0 upset of defending champions Weymouth Wales in the Barbados Football Association’s Premier League at the Wildey Turf on Sunday.

University of the West Indies (UWI) Blackbirds claimed a blowout 5-1 win over Youth Milan in the nightcap encounter, after Barbados Defence Force Sports Programme (BDFSP) took a narrow 1-0 success over Mark’s Auto Spares Porey Spring United on the day of the final games of 2018.

Lions began the game bottom of Zone 2 with a single point compared with their opposition’s record of 11 points but earned a result even the most ardent of Bajan football fans certainly could not have foreseen.

Wales’ Rico Graham broke the deadlock in the 34th minute but unfortunately for him and his team, his effort landed in the wrong net. A gorgeous through ball to Shamar Edwards put him one on one with Wales’ defender Ricardio Morris on the left flank and the burly striker muscled his way past Morris, delivering a dangerous cross into the penalty area. Under pressure to make a clearance, Graham inadvertently prodded past a helpless Omari Eastmond in the Wales goal. (NM)
