Hollywood award-winning actress Sigourney Weaver will receive the Founders Award as an Icon in the Performing Arts in the Walled Garden Theatre at the Barbados Museum tonight.
The Cinema Under The Stars tribute to the American actress is a highlight of the third annual Barbados Independent Film Festival with films being shown at a range of venues from January 11 to 20. There will also be a screening of Weaver’s personally-selected film A Map of the World and patrons will get the opportunity for a conversation with the actress and to mingle at a cocktail reception which follows.
“BIFF showcases the work of exceptional storytellers whose films embody the festival’s overarching themes of celebrating resilience and humankind’s capacity to overcome adversity. No one better represents these themes than Ms Weaver, who by her exceptional range of talent, unforgettable roles and trailblazing career continues to break down barriers for generations of smart, leading female actors to follow,” the BIFF organisers said.
“Ms Weaver’s thriving career continues to inspire us all as she puts out one brilliant performance after another. She is a true and important icon of our time.”
Weaver’s career has spanned decades, encompassing several of the highest grossing films of all time such as Avatar, the Aliens films, Ghostbusters; as well as multiple prestigious awards and critically acclaimed successes. (GC)
