The Barbados Association of the Blind (BAB) is asking Minister of Transport, Works and Maintenance Dr William Duguid to consider members of the disabled community before rolling out the new transport and traffic management system.

Rudyard Welch, the association’s representative made the plea on Wednesday during the National Consultation on Traffic Management at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre.

Welch said it was dangerous for the visually impaired to traverse the island, especially in The City, and asked that measures be put in place to accommodate that community.

“It is challenging for blind persons to manoeuvre in The City when people park their cars everywhere and obstruct us from walking on pathways.

“More so, most of the sidewalks in town are not conducive for our canes and oftentimes we have to step in the roads and walk. Trouble areas include Palmetto Square, Marhill Street, Roebuck Street and Princess Alice,” he said.

Welch asked that consideration should be given for other road users when the new plans are put in place. (SB)
