Dems watching debt deal closely

The Democratic Labour Party (DLP) won’t be coming up with any applause for Government reaching a deal with some of its foreign creditors.

President of the party, Verla De Peiza, believes keen eyes should be kept on the issue.

“The Democratic Labour Party is relieved that it appears Barbados is bringing this sordid chapter to an end. Whilst this may be the case though, the expression “in principle” makes us cautious, as obviously negotiations are still ongoing, with details still being fleshed out,” she told the Saturday Sun yesterday.

“In the absence of full disclosure there cannot be a comprehensive analysis,” the DLP head added.

“There needs to be, in short order, a full and public accounting of the resultant debt incurred to White Oak to date and the source of funds to meet that additional burden. In addition, where there are extended times to pay, there usually also are stiffer penalty provisions for default and higher interest payments,” said De Peiza. (BA)
