Police have seized a large quantity of locally grown cannabis valued in excess of $1.8 million.

In a media release today, lawmen say over 11 000 plants, ranging from seedlings to 18 feet high, were discovered at 2nd Avenue Greens, St George, on Friday.

Around 4:40 p.m., members of the Suppressing Criminal Activity Threatened Society (SCATS) unit, acting on a tip, went to a bushy area in the district and discovered the marijuana fields.

With assistance from the Servility patrol and Bridgetown Divisional patrol, police removed 3 257 plants, but the operation stopped because of fading light.

Lawmen, including some from the Tactical Response and Narcotics Units, returned to the scene today and removed 8 026 plants.

The 11 283 plants weighed approximately 920 pounds and have an estimated street value of $1 832 340.

The drugs are currently being kept in police custody.

No arrests have been made, but investigations are continuing. (PR/SAT)
