Sir Hilary warns of low enrolment

The Caribbean has the lowest enrolment per capita in higher education throughout this hemisphere, and the COVID-19 pandemic threatens to push the region further down the scale.

This is according to Vice-Chancellor of The University of the West Indies, Professor Sir Hilary Beckles. He was speaking yesterday during a “One Caribbean” virtual forum on UWITV entitled, Assessing The Impacts Of COVID-19: Designing The Future Of The Caribbean University Sector.

“If we take the age cohort 18 to 30, the Caribbean has the lowest enrolment in higher education in the hemisphere. We are less than 25 per cent in the hemisphere where the average is close to 45 per cent,” he said.

“We already have an enrolment crisis. We already are suffering the consequences of low enrolment in higher education and professorial training . . . so we are likely to be experiencing a further reduction in higher education when we are already in the hemisphere at the bottom of that enrolment chart,” he said.(RA)
