Martindale’s Road, St Michael will remain closed for a while longer.
An old mahogany tree on the compound of The St Michael School fell and blocked the road – which was cordoned off at both ends – and several agencies are on site clearing the area.
Operations officer of the Roving Response Team, Jefferson Bovell, initially estimated the road would reopen around 11:30 a.m. However, the crew from the Ministry of Transport and Works decided they would trim some of the other overhanding branches at the same time.
No timeframe was given for the reopening of the road.
In the meantime, the front gate of The St Michael School remains closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic, but the back gate at Taylor’s Avenue is open.
Bovell told Nation News they received the call about the fallen tree around 6:15 a.m., but work was delayed for two hours while they waited on the Barbados Light and Power Company Limited to turn off electricity and secure the downed power lines.
He believes the heavy rains softened the ground, causing the tree to fall. (SAT)
