Objection

With the ban on visitations at Her Majesty’s Prison Dodds now entering an eighth month, two prominent lawyers are raising concerns surrounding a breach of attorney-client privilege.

Additionally, prison support groups said they were worried that absence, coupled with the frustration of not knowing when they would be able to see their loved ones, was likely to take an emotional and mental toll on the inmates.

The measure which was put in place back in March in an effort to prevent an outbreak of COVID-19 at the St Philip facility, only has provisions for attorneys to have virtual access to clients behind the prison wall.

Attorney-at-law Andrew Pilgrim QC, said this had proven to be far from sufficient. The outspoken attorney argued that while he understood the rationale behind the prohibition of visits, it was disconcerting to him that proper alternatives had not been put in place to ensure prisoners’ access to legal representation was not compromised.
