Akela Jones is the lone Barbadian still to compete at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Belgrade.

She will be in the long jump among a field of 15, with one of the season’s best performances of 6.80 metres. Jones will compete in the afternoon session.

Meanwhile, neither Mario Burke nor Sada Williams made it to the final of their respective event.

Burke placed second in the opening heat of the men’s 60 metres with 6.64 seconds, but with 6.67 in an extremely close semi-final, he was only good for sixth.

Italy’s Olympic 100m champion Lamont Marcell Jacobs edged American Christian Coleman to claim gold, clocking 6.41 seconds to beat the defending champion by 0.003 seconds.

Jacobs is the first reigning Olympic 100m champion to win the indoor 60m title. American Marvin Bracy ran 6.44 secs to take the bronze medal.

Williams did not make it out of the first round of the 400 metres with a time of 52.65 seconds.

Double Olympic champion Shaunae Miller-Uibo added the world indoor 400m to her collection of titles with a dominant display in Serbia. The Bahamian athlete led throughout, winning in 50.31 seconds, as the Netherlands’ Femke Bol (50.57) took silver and Jamaican Stephenie Ann McPherson finished in bronze in 50.79, a new national indoor record.

Trinidad and Tobago’s Jereem Richards prevailed in the men’s 400m with a championship record run of 45 seconds to finish narrowly ahead of American Trevor Bassitt (45.05), while Sweden’s Carl Bengtstrom set a new national indoor record of 45.33 to claim bronze. (SAT/BBC)
