Scotland Under-19 Women bowed out of the ICC Women’s Under 19 T20 World Cup in spite of a five-wicket win over United States U19 Women at Willowmoore Park in South Africa on Friday.

United States won the toss and chose to bat, posting 147-7 in their 20 overs. Buoyed by captain Katherine Fraser’s knock of 59, Scotland chased down the total with two balls to spare, ending on 148-5.

The United States continued their trend of batting first throughout the competition and got off to a promising start, putting on 75 runs for the first wicket. Openers Disha Dhingra and Laasya Mullapudi scored 30 and 43 runs respectively.  Left handed Mullapudi, in particular, was quick to punish anything of a shorter length, smashing eight fours in her innings, with most of them coming square of the wicket.

Once the openers were dismissed, Fraser’s loopy off breaks proved too good for the American middle order as they held out to the deep fielders trying to score quickly. However an enterprising score of 22 from Ritu Singh helped the US to a challenging total of 147.

In response, Scotland got off to a rocky start with opener and wicketkeeper batter Alisa Lister dismissed in the second over off a spectacular catch by Tya Gonsalves at the midwicket midwicket boundary, parrying it and then holding on.

At the halfway stage, they were 67-3 and looking like throwing away their chance to end on a high. Up stepped Katherine Fraser to put her side into the ascendency with a player of the match performance.

After struggling for much of the competition with only 22 runs scored in her three innings, she displayed her full array of shots. Consecutive lofted drives over mid off for four against Bhumika Bhadriraju were accompanied by boundaries via a square cut against Isani Vaghela and slog sweeps off Geetika Kodali.

In total she hit eight fours and one six, striking at 125. When she held out to Aditiba Chudasama at mid-on looking for another boundary down the ground, there was panic in the Scottish dressing room with eight runs still needed from seven deliveries. It intensified when five runs were needed off the last three balls and most recognised batters were already inside, but Molly Paton quelled those fears with a swing through the leg side went to the fine leg boundary.

Summarised Scores:

United States of America U19 Women (Laasya Mullapudi 43, Disha Dhingra 30; Katherine Fraser 3-23, Orla Montgomery 2-29). Scotland U19 Women 147-7 (Katherine Fraser 59, Emma Walsingham 27; Aditiba Chudasama 2-20). Scotland won by five wickets with two balls to spare.

Zimbabwe U19 Women 86-8 (Tawananyasha Marumani 20, Danielle Meikle 20; Ni Luh Dewi 5-18, Ni Ariani 2-7). Indonesia U19 Women 87-8 (Ni Luh Dewi 14, Thersiana Weo 14; Kelis Ndhlovu 3-8, Chipo Moyo 3-12). Indonesia won by three wickets with twelve balls remaining.
