The Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) has dismissed the appeal of convicted killer Renaldo Anderson Alleyne.

And, Alleyne will have to serve a minimum of 25 years before the possibility of him being released is taken into consideration. His time served while on remand will be included, the CCJ also determined in today’s decision, which was presented via live tele-conferencing from the Court’s headquarters in Port of Spain, Trinidad.

Alleyne, 29, of Prescod Bottom, Hindsbury Road, was one of two young men who had been charged with murdering Tiffany Harding, Kellishaw Ollivierre, Kelly-Ann Welch, Shanna Griffith, Nikkita Belgrave and Pearl Cornelius after the two firebombed the Campus Trendz store on Tudor Street, St Michael, on September 3, 2010.

He was convicted of the robbery in June, 2011.

Alleyne had appealed the six life sentences to the CCJ, after the substantive sentence had been upheld by Barbados’ Court of Appeal.

Alleyne, who was represented by attorney-at-law Arthur Holder, argued the six life sentences were excessive, and that he should have had his sentence discounted due to his early guilty plea.

In dismissing his appeal, the Court of Appeal held that his sentences were neither excessive, disproportionate nor wrong in principle, given the gravity of the offence, and that the issue of a discount does not apply to an indeterminate sentence. (BA)
