NATIONAL UNION OF PUBLIC WORKERS president Akanni McDowall is concerned Government’s special programme to get retrenched workers back on their feet has not been fully implemented.

McDowall, who is a member of the Barbados Economic Recovery and Transformation Monitoring Committee, said workers who lost their jobs last year were now faced with a “lull”, having received their six months of unemployment benefits.

Government announced the establishment of the Retooling, Empowering, Retraining and Enfranchising (RERE) programme last year, but the trade union leader said “we are a bit concerned with the implementation of the RERE programme”.

He was speaking yesterday at Sagicor, Wildey, as the committee briefed the media on Government’s reaching its targets under the BERT programme.
