Barbados will be sending a six-member team of some of its finest young, skilled professionals to compete at the 45th biennial WorldSkills Competition in Kazan, Russia.

This unique, live technical and vocational skills competition is hosted by WorldSkills International which is the global hub for skills excellence and development. It will run from August 22 to 27.

This is the second time that Barbados will be competing at the WorldSkills Competition.

In 2017, Barbados sent a four-member team to WorldSkills Abu Dhabi.

The team to WorldSkills Kazan 2019 comprises Terrique Ward (Car Painting), Shae White (Cooking), Peabo Sampson (Fashion Technology), Kristina Patrick (Graphic Design Technology), Zaria Archer (Hairdressing) and Danny Mayers (Restaurant Service).

They were the gold medal winners in their respective skill areas at the fourth biennial WorldSkills Barbados 2018 competition. They earned the opportunity to represent their country at WorldSkills Kazan 2019 by achieving 75 per cent or more in the finals of WorldSkills Barbados competition, and, 80 per cent or more in the Competitors Developmental Programme which focuses on soft skills development.

The competitors will be accompanied by Skill Experts who will serve as coaches as well as Judges at WorldSkills Kazan. The Experts are Negas Alleyne-Browne (Car Painting), Peter Edey (Cooking), Joy Prime (Fashion Technology), Shelly Mayers (Graphic Design Technology), Arlette Knight-Olton (Hairdressing) and Roderick Prescod (Restaurant Service). The team officials are Official Delegate Henderson Eastmond, Technical Delegate Dario Walcott, Technical Delegate Assistant Rosline Cumberbatch and Team Leader Sarah Gilkes-Daniel.

Walcott said the competitors and their Experts have already begun training for the competition.

“In addition to the training being conducted locally by the Experts, the Fashion Technology, Graphic Design and Car Painting competitors and their Experts had the benefit of taking part in the Brazil team’s Training and Time Trial Competition in March.”

He added: “The Car Painting competitor Terrique Ward and Expert Negus Alleyne-Browne travelled to Germany to participate in SATA’s car painting training and competition, May 5 to 9, 2019. SATA is the official WorldSkills International car painting sponsor. The invitation to the SATA Car Painting Challenge 2019 was facilitated through Automotive Art Inc., the skill area sponsor for Car Painting at the WorldSkills Barbados 2018 competition.”  (PR)
