Opposition Leader Bishop Joseph Atherley (FP)
Opposition Leader Bishop Joseph Atherley has urged Christians to embrace politics and politicians as an integral part of their lives which cannot be ignored.
Wearing his religious collar along with his political hat, the parliamentary representative for the St Michael West constituency told scores of Christians at Solidarity House Thursday night they must recognise politics is about the mix of power relations in the society.
“It is absolutely incumbent upon the church that the church understands it becomes a part of that power mix because it is out of that (power mix) that policy comes which affects the lives of all of our people,” Atherley said.
The People’s Party for Democracy and Development leader was speaking two weeks after another church leader, Baptist preacher Reverend Vincent Wood’s declaration in a radio broadcast that church leaders have no business in “elective politics”.
The pastor of the Emmanuel Baptist Church said that the Baptists believed in the separation of church and state. (GC/AC)
