The new and blossoming cannabis or marijuana industry in Canada may turn out to be an employment blessing in disguise for Barbadians seeking jobs abroad.
Barbados’ Consul-General in Toronto, Sonia Marville-Carter, confirmed that consultants and human resource decision makers have expressed interest in securing Barbadians to work in the sector that has emerged as one of Canada’s fastest growing industries.
But before any Barbadian can work in the sector, legislation in Barbados has to be changed. She explained the change was necessary as the workers’ earnings could not be repatriated as coming from working in the marijuana sector.
“We have been having discussions with consultants with the marijuana industry, but until our legislation in Barbados has been changed, we really can’t pursue that employment opportunity,” explained Marville-Carter. (TB)
