Gone!

The historic water cistern at Fort George, St Michael is no more.

But before bulldozers moved in last week and completed the demolition job they started less than two weeks ago, a team from Georgia, United States, flew in and, as Tropical Storm Dorian threatened Barbados, made a full digital record of the site.

And while president of the Barbados National Trust, Peter Stevens, admits he is “not comfortable” with the demolition, he understood “the impossibility of the situation and the fact we had to lose”.

“I am not happy we lost at all, but we are not stupid and we do acknowledge the national need in terms of the utility. And the supply of water probably outweighed the historic value; these things are going to happen.” (HLE)
