The University of the West Indies (UWI) Blackbirds clawed their way to the semi-finals of the Capelli Cup with a narrow 1-0 victory over Empire on Sunday night at the Wildey Turf.

Grenadian Shamari Mark’s first-half strike helped the Blackbirds advance against a misfiring Empire unit, while Weymouth Wales progressed, also 1-0, against Paradise, courtesy of a well-timed header by Rico Graham.

Mark found the mark for UWI in the 24th minute against the run of play, as Empire held a slight advantage on possession in the first half.

After a failed Empire attack, Blackbirds went down the other end of the pitch and Niall Reid-Stephen laid an inch-perfect pass into the path of Mark, who unleashed an unstoppable shot from distance into the roof of the net, leaving Empire custodian Oba Tucker stranded. (NM)
