Outages fear

IT IS POSSIBLE there could be other major outages as the Barbados Light & Power Co. Ltd (BL&P) grapples with problems of contaminants in oil shipments and ageing units.

Yesterday’s islandwide outage from just after 7 a.m. ran until well into last night for some in the rural parishes of St Peter, St Philip and St Thomas, and also parts of St Michael.

In the crippling chaos, some supermarkets were closed, gas station pumps were affected, the check-out kiosks at the Grantley Adams International Airport were down, schools closed at noon partly because the School Meals Department could not prepare lunches, events were called off and some businesses suffered losses.

The BL&P blamed the critical loss of electrical power, which also affected the pumping of water and led to water outages, on a fault at its substation next to its Spring Garden, St Michael plant. (AC)
