A FIELD HOSPITAL to take the stress off Accident & Emergency Department (A&E) and shield the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) from COVID-19 related cases should be taking on patients from this week.
Barbados Defence Force (BDF) soldiers moved within a day to set up the field medical facility at the E.R. Walrond Clinical Skills Building, Jemmotts Lane, St Michael, which is part of the University of the West Indies.
After touring the respiratory facility, Minister of Health and Wellness Jeffrey Bostic said today it would give critical support to the QEH and the overall national effort to treat COVID-19. He explained it would provide a space to isolate people with moderate respiratory conditions, who might not necessarily be COVID-19 affected.
Dr David Byer, medical consultant attached to emergency services of the QEH, said the facility, with a capacity of up to 20 patients, was an extension of what the hospital could offer to those with tests pending. He added test results could take from six to 24 hours. (AC)
