National women’s badminton champion Monyata Riviera is staying positive through the national shutdown due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Riviera, 25, who started the year with a bang by finally clinching the title on her third time facing multiple champion Tamisha Williams-Griffith, told MIDWEEK SPORT she was anticipating a busy 2020 until those plans were shattered by the ongoing COVID-19.

“It has been a serious impact because everything is at a standstill. Most events have been cancelled or postponed so tournament-wise there isn’t any to go to,” she said.

Riviera, who also partnered with Williams-Griffith to take the women’s doubles title and finished runners up with Cory Fanus in mixed doubles at the National Championships in February said the virus has also impacted her actual on court training. (RG)
