In, but still out

The 2010 World Cup finals produced its most controversial moment yesterday.
It came after England were denied an equalising goal against Germany.
With England trailing 2-1 late in the first half, midfielder Frank Lampard struck a shot from about 20 metres out which hit the bar, dropped a metre behind the line, then bounced up and hit the bar again before it was gathered by goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.
Replays showed the ball bouncing behind the line but the referee’s assistant did not see it that way. It made an ironic comparison with Geoff Hurst’s disputed goal in the 1966 final between
England and West Germany which England won.
A further two goals by Germany in the second half yesterday gave them a 4-1 victory and a place in the quarter-finals against Argentina.
