THE English skills programme of the University of the West Indies Open Campus has been given a significant boost through a donation of books and literary materials from Days Bookstore.
The bookstore’s managing director, Karen Austin, handed over the items to UWI programme officer Ryan Byer last week at the campus’ office in the Pine.
“I’m quite enthused about this new relationship and I can assure you it will continue,” Austin said. “It’s nice to be able to give to those who need help.”
She undertook to seek additional contributions to the programme from publishers.
Describing the books and materials as very useful and relevant, Byer said the English classes have been ongoing for years and participants are asked to contribute a nominal fee that does not recover costs. This prompted the campus to approach the bookstore for assistance.
Byer said that the English programme, which is designed to assist people with difficulty in reading and writing, is held at the St Michael School and has grown in popularity. (GA)
