Two fugitives led police on a high speed chase yesterday before a dramatic crash of their stolen car at Lower Greys, Christ Church.
One of the men had to undergo immediate surgery and remained in critical condition last night while his accomplice was still being treated at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
Lawmen had been on the hunt for the two, whose names remained withheld up to Press time last night. One man is wanted in connection with a murder while the other, who recently was freed of a murder charge on a technicality, in being sought for serious crimes. Police reported that a submachine gun was recovered from the scene.
The police pursuit began after 2 p.m., according to a witness who did not wish to be identified. A man, among the onlookers at the cordoned-off Lower Greys area said that he was having lunch at the Grantley Adams Industrial Estate when he heard the shout, “Police, do not move!”
“I then saw two guys take off in a white car, hitting another car which was parked in front of Laparkan. They scratched out of there with the police in pursuit,” said the man who followed the action to Lower Grey.
The escapees took the stretch of road leading from Coral Ridge to Boarded Hall Road which has a downhill section where a piece of the car’s undercarriage landed in the gutter and the sidewalk was damaged.
The car ended up on its top, apparently after slamming into an embankment and overturning just before the entrance to API Asphalt Processors.
While one of the men was whisked away by ambulance, the other was extracted from the vehicle and kept a few yards away in a side road under heavy guard until an Island Care Ambulance arrived to transport him to the hospital. That ambulance arrived around 3:20 p.m.
Heavily armed police officers along with two Barbados Defence Force soldiers flooded Lower Greys and the QEH. At the crash the lawmen searched the wrecked vehicle as well as the nearby shrubbery and canefield with the help of the canine unit. (KB/AC)
