The WICB Women’s 50-overs Cricket Tournament will be held in Barbados from August 8 to 14, and the Barbados team will be making an all-out effort to make sure the championship trophy stays right here.
Barbados have been drawn in Zone B with St Vincent and The Grenadines, St Lucia and Dominica, while two-time defending champions Trinidad and Tobago have Jamaica, Guyana and  Grenada in the other group.
Team manager Pat Greenidge told NATIONSPORT they were not being arrogant, but would like to win.
“It is always a pleasure to win a competition on your home ground. We know it won’t be easy,” Greenidge said.
“We have our eyes set on the trophy.
However, we are going to play the cricket in the middle. We are going to go out there and try to execute.
You could have a strong team on paper. The key is that you have to play together as a team.
“As long as you can get that team unity going – and the mere fact that we were been together for three months, I would like to think that is another aspect we have been able to harness.
“We have a good team and as long as we can get it clicking out in the middle, we have an equal opportunity to win this tournament.”
Greenidge said defending champions Trinidad and Tobago had also strengthened their team, while Jamaica have the West Indies’ No. 1 women’s player in Stafanie Taylor.
The manager said they were happy with the draw, and believes this is one of the strongest teams ever assembled because they have been training for three months, three times a week.
“People will say we have the core of girls who have been playing over the years. Yes, but while you have the core girls, we always had about three or four girls who might not have been as strong, but they are stronger than we have had in the past.”
Head coach Vasbert Drakes and Ezra Moseley, who has been “instrumental” to the team, have also had time to work with the players.
She noted that in the past the team was only assembled a few weeks before the tournament started, but this was the first time they have had such an extended period of time and more concentrated training sessions.
One area of concern has been the lack of practice matches because of the inclemency of the weather. The women played The St Michael School’s Under-19 team and beat them by 76 runs.
Another match against the Barbados Defence Force was washed out.
Greenidge said there were four trial matches and they hoped to play at least one more before the tournament started.
