Today’s sitting of the House of Assembly has been adjourned until 2 p.m.

The adjournment is to allow Members of Parliament to attend the funeral of longstanding former President of the Senate Sir Fred Gollop. The Official Funeral is scheduled for 10 a.m. at Coral Ridge Memorial Gardens, Christ Church.

Sir Fred, who was founding chairman of the Nation Corporation and One Caribbean Media Group, died last Wednesday.

The Lower House, which was supposed to convene at 10 a.m., started an hour earlier after Leader of the House and Minister of Education, Technological and Vocational Training Santia Bradshaw requested the earlier sitting via a letter to Speaker Arthur Holder on Monday.

Before agreeing to the adjournment in accordance with Standing Order 69, Holder told members that while the Standing Order spoke about changing the sitting to an earlier day it did not specify time.

“It might be in this Chamber’s interest if there can be an insertion at some time thereafter in relation to time, just for clarity,” he said.

In response shortly before the House adjourned, Bradshaw told the Speaker: “I do believe that the committees that relate to the Standing Orders will certainly consider your recommendation and make the appropriate amendment to the Standing Orders.” (SC)
