REMEMBERING BARROW: Biography

On the occasion of Errol Barrow Day, we remember late prime minister Errol Walton Barrow. He would have been 99 years old today.. These articles were published as a tribute in June 1987.

BIOGRAPHY

Name: Errol Walton (The Dipper) Barrow, QC; Rt. Hon., PC, MP, LLD, BSC (University of London), Prime Minister and Minister of Economic Affairs

Born: St Lucy, Barbados, January 21, 1920; son of the late Reverend Reginald Grant Barrow and Ruth Barrow (née O’neale)

Educated: Danish School, St Croix, US Virgin Islands; Wesley Hall Boys’ School; Combermere; Harrison College; London University (1950)

Married: November 8, 1945 to Carolyn née Plaskett of New Jersey; one daughter, Mrs. Lesley Whatley and son, David O’Neale Barrow.

Career: R.A. F. World War II (Personal Navigation Officer to Commander-in-Chief, British Army of the Rhine, 1940-1947); called to Bar, Inns of Court,  1949; member of the Barbados Labour Party 1951-1955; in Legislature 1951-1956; joined Democratic Labour Party (DLP) in 1955; in Legislature 1958-1987; chairman of the DLP in 1960; Premier and Minister of Finance, 1961-1966. Prime Minister from 1966-1976; Privy Councillor 1969; Author of Canada’s Role in the West Indies, 1964; received Lions International Head of State Award, 1967; LL.D, University of Sussex, 1972; Leader of the Opposition from 1976-1986; Prime Minister 1986-87.

Religion: Anglican

Affiliations: Guild of Air Pilots and Navigators, Barbados Light Aeroplane Club, Barbados Cruising.

Recreations: Flying, diving, fishing, photography and cooking.
