Hit-and-run accused bailed

DERRICK SHERLAND NOWELL, 43, of Battaleys, St Peter, was released on $5 000 yesterday on his second appearance in the Holetown Magistrate’s Court.

Nowell has been charged in connection with the hit-and-run of Alexandra schoolgirl Zawadi Gilkes, 13, of St Stephen’s, Black Rock, St Michael. He has seven charges in relation to the accident along Speightstown By-Pass Road, St Peter, that occurred on Wednesday and left Gilkes bruised and bloodied.

The accused was remanded overnight when he first appeared on Thursday.

Nowell, who is charged with, failing to stop at an accident; driving without due care and reasonable consideration; having no tax, no insurance, no valid driver’s licence; failing to register a vehicle and fraudulent use of number plates, will return to court on November 27. (AC)
