Dumping at new sites

Some popular areas are cleaner but newer dump sites are still cropping up, the executive director of the Future Centre Trust said yesterday on the fifth Clean Up Barbados day.
At the start of the day’s activities, Cherice Gibson told the SUNDAY SUN that officials and team had scouted locations and “many of them were not as dirty, so to speak, as we have witnessed in previous years”.
At the end of an exhaustive day of tackling illegally dumped garbage and litter from coastal and inland areas, volunteers removed just under four tonnes from the East Coast, West Coast, South Coast and some inland areas.
Gibson said two tonnes of garbage were removed from areas along the East Coast, about 1 500 pounds from the West Coast, while volunteers bagged 500 pounds from central and roadside areas. A tonne was removed from the South Coast.
She highlighted the three-member team, led by Peter Bynoe, who removed hundreds of pounds of garbage from the grounds of the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex in Wildey, St Michael.
