FORMER LEADER of the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) administration Owen Arthur engaged Queen’s Counsel Hal Gollop and three legal scholars to rewrite the Barbados Constitution and the disclosure has been slammed by a university academic.
The revelation drew a sharp response from political scientist Cynthia Barrow-Giles, who insisted that any secrecy had to be removed and Barbadian citizens be fully included in any move by the island to become a republic.
During a discussion on Tuesday night hosted by the Ellerslie Secondary School Alumni Association on the subject at the Black Rock, St Michael institution, matters came to a head during the discussion after Gollop revealed that under Arthur, he, along with Sir Roy Marshall, Keith William Patchett and Professor Simeon McIntosh, were involved in writing of a new Constitution for Barbados.
But Giles-Barrow, a lecturer at the Cave Hill Campus of the University of the West Indies, expressed shock that such a development was undertaken behind closed doors.
