“Lone goal puts Wales in”

Weymouth Wales’ hopes of winning a domestic double remain alive as the reigning Premier League champions sent knockout holders Paradise crashing out of the Barbados Football Association’s (BFA) Champions Cup at the quarter-final stage.

The experienced Walton Burrowes was the hero on Sunday night at the Wildey Turf, scoring the lone goal in the 28th minute to give Wales a 1-0 victory and a spot in the semi-final.

It came against the run of play. Under pressure from a wave of Paradise attacks, full-back Ricardio Morris’ right-footed clearance fell into the path of Burrowes, who was heavily marked by central defender Barry Skeete.

The former national captain opted to head back towards goalkeeper Jason Boxill, but Burrowes showed great awareness and anticipation to intercept Skeete’s mistimed back-pass and lobbed the ball over the head of the advancing Boxill, who was miles off the goal line. (AGB)
