THERE WAS NO WORD from Government last night on whether it had decided to sell its majority shareholding in regional airline LIAT, despite Antiguan leader Gaston Browne saying it intended to do so.
Speaking on his private radio station on Sunday, Prime Minister Browne said Barbados had agreed to sell almost all of its shares to Antigua and Barbuda, where the cash-strapped carrier was based.
However, efforts to get confirmation from Prime Minister Mia Mottley were unsuccessful, as up to press time she was said to be in a protracted meeting on a different issue.
Attempts to reach Minister of Tourism and International Transport Kerrie Symmonds were also unsuccessful.
Browne declared he had received communication from Mottley, indicating that Barbados was willing to sell all but ten per cent of its shares.
Barbados holds 49 per cent of LIAT shares and Antigua and Barbuda 34 per cent. If the deal is finalised, the latter would control 73 per cent of the airline. (CMC/BW)
