“Gaskin, Sealy provide medal hope”

It was a tale of two races as the petite Sonia Gaskin and the powerfully built Sade Sealy brought pride to Barbados yesterday with second place qualifying spots in the 800 metres event at the Sonia s in Lima, Peru.

Gaskin kept track of the leaders, holding on to that second spot in the first semi-final and with guts and guile strode home in 2:05.85 second to Cuba’s Rose Mary Blanco, who won in 2:05.25.  Third was Deborah Rodriguez of Uruguay in 2:06.30.

Sealy, on the other hand, seemed to be boxed in by the other runners on the first lap, but halfway into the second showed her class, power and experience to move away from the crowd in pursuit of Jamaica’s Natoya Goule. The Jamaican finished in 2:02.68 with Sealy crossing the line in 2:03.23. (KB)
