“Blackbirds’ third win”


The University of the West Indies Blackbirds dismissed defending champions Pan American Insurance Warrens and soared to 3/0 in a bid to regain the Goddard Enterprises Limited women’s volleyball knockout crown when the action continued on Sunday at the Wildey Gymnasium.

The Blackbirds, who had claimed the title in their first year in Division One in 2017 defeated a struggling Warrens 25-21, 25-17, 25-12. Setter Afyia Taylor unleashed attackers Shakera Hall, Dania Hamilton, Tenielle Chapman-Goodluck and Rikiesha Levert to drop Warrens to their first loss in three games.

Warrens, who have won a title every year since entering the senior division in 2010 suffered a further setback yesterday when founding member Talya Layne suffered a torn Achilles tendon.

Warrens have already lost Xhane Greenidge off on a volleyball scholarship and former national captain Anthazia Mason and Rhe-Ann Niles are yet to start the new season due to injuries. (KB)
