The Barbados Football Association (BFA) has joined with the Dexter Marshall Brazilian Academy in asking corporate Barbados and all Barbadians to assist five talented youngsters who have been selected to try out for possible scholarships in Brazil.The five players – Shane Hermas, Damien Lorde, Raymond Hope, Mica Mings and Tremaine St Hill – are almost $65 000 away from the budget needed to get to Brazil where they will be examined at America Miniero with the possibility of further training, education and professional contracts on the offer. The group is scheduled to leave next Saturday.“If we are unable to raise the money by that time, then we will have to push back the departure date, which is risky, as if we try to move too late then the players will have to head back to school without getting the opportunity of pursuing possible careers in the sport that they love,” Marshall told the media.BFA president Ronald Jones explained that his organisation was supportive of Marshall’s work over the years and the BFA would meet on Thursday night to decide on a contribution to the youngsters. However, he made a personal contribution of funds to the tour and asked Barbados to be as generous in their pockets as they were in spirit.A scout from Brazil visited Barbados and was keen to recruit Mings, Hope and St Hill for his camp. Jones pointed out that the youngsters would be receiving a tripartite boon in learning Portuguese, furthering their education and developing their football skills.“Although Brazil has flattered to deceive in recent times, there is no doubt that Brazil is the place to learn the skills of playing top class football,” Jones added.Tomorrow, a fund-raising gospel concert will be held at the First Baptist Church, Constitution Road, and an account has been opened at FirstCaribbean Bank with the No. 1000880575 for people wishing to contribute to the effort. Contributions can also be made at the BFA’s office in Welches.Marshall said that the gateway for Barbados’ football to make an international mark was to develop a cadre of professional players.
