It was a special occasion for Grantley Adams International Airport Inc. as they twinned with the Barbados Cancer Society Breast Screening Programme to launch its annual GAIA Inc. Goes Pink campaign lighting ceremony to commemorate Breast Cancer Awareness month last Tuesday.

It has become customary for GAIA Inc. to turn the external lighting of the airport pink to highlight the month of October, celebrated as Breast Cancer Screening month.

Acting chief executive officer of GAIA Inc. Terry Layne said the campaign forms part of its corporate social responsibility, and as the month progresses, GAIA will add more lights to the airport.

Chairperson of the Barbados Cancer Society’s Breast Screening Programme Dr Shirley Hanoman-Jhagroo was pleased with the joint venture and the programme also got a cheque for $1 000, which was collected from the airport’s Paying For Charities Box, which is funded by travellers.

Up to June this year, 107 000 persons had benefited from the programme which made a commitment 18 years ago to reduce the number of clinical deaths from breast cancer. This was done through early detection and persons can now benefit from a one-stop diagnostic breast cancer screening clinic.

Dr Hanoman-Jhagroo also said the facilities at the Cancer Society’s clinic were of first world status and equipped with a fully trained staff where results could be returned within 48 hours.  (JS)
