“Call for full-time vets”

A veterinarian should be on call for every race day to reduce the chances of life-threatening injuries to horses.

This plea is coming from horse racing legend Chally Jones and long-serving trainer Sean Hall.

Jones, who has been involved with the sport of kings for six decades and has functioned successfully in various roles ranging from groom in 1954 to jockey, owner, breeder and trainer, thinks the time has come for the Barbados Turf Club (BTC) to follow the trend of the United States and Canada.

“In the United States, Canada and England, every horse is examined before it goes to race. Here, they say, they are not spending that money, so there is every chance we are going to get some unsound horses going out,” he said. (MK)
