“Gymnast suffers training setback”

Barbados’ top gymnast Erin Pinder is concerned about being unable to receive live training to further enhance her skills after the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic brought a premature end to a fruitful season.

The 15-year-old student of The St Michael School had been enjoying a successful 2019-2020 season, gaining three gold medals, but was aiming to increase the number to five by yearend.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted my life as a gymnast as the sport requires hands-on training to perfect the skills required to advance to the next level,” she told Weekend Sport.

“The absence of the four apparatus – bars, beam, vault and floor – as well as my coaches [Alison Jackson, Jelani Bruce and Corey Greenidge] have lessened my chances of gaining required skills during this time,” said Pinder, who competes in the Level 8 category.
