David Holford was remembered as a serious man who believed in the virtues of discipline.

Holford was laid to rest yesterday at Coral Ridge Memorial Gardens after a service of celebration for his life attended by family, friends, and associates, including cricket contemporaries the Right Excellent, Sir Garfield Sobers, his cousin, and former West Indies fast bowler Reverend Sir Wes Hall.

Members of the Spartan club, which Holford played for and captained to several domestic titles, and served as president, wheeled the casket bearing the former Windies leg-spinner into and out of the chapel of the cemetery.

They included contemporaries such as Arlington Hunte, Richard Lorde and Clayton Johnson, who referred to Holford as “Skip”, as well as players of more recent vintage such as Wayne Daniel, Alvin Greenidge, Hendy Springer, Philo Wallace, and Sulieman Benn, all of whom referred to him as “Manage”.

In delivering the eulogy, attorney Philip Nicholls said when he was a member of the Barbados Cricket Association (BCA) board of management, he was privileged to sit and chat with Holford and be regaled with his stories of past cricket exploits and insights into the sport. (AR)
