Experts: Late start no good

THE LATE START of this year’s crop makes it something of a kadooment in the eyes of some experts.

Patrick Bethell, chairman of the independent farmers group, and Dr Frances Chandler, a former senator, and one of Barbados’ most prominent agronomists, both say an April start date for harvesting the crop is a disgrace.

A peeved Bethell could not hold back his ire.

“It’s like we are spitting in the wind every year,” he told the SUNDAY SUN.

“We are starting later and later every year, and the repercussions will be seen eventually,” Bethell said, noting that the crop had started in April, at a time when it should really be ending.
