Sir Garfield St Aubyn Sobers (1936)

FROM A YOUNG AGE, Sir Garry was a “baller”.

He could play cricket, football, basketball and, later on, even golf. It is said of Sobers that “he has been the role model also for millions of youngsters beyond the shores of Barbados”.

He is the single most popular of all Barbadians and he has taken our name to all parts of the world and covered it with glory.

Sobers was a part of many firsts throughout his cricketing career, but the one that showed how much he was appreciated was when he was knighted in 1975 by Queen Elizabeth II at the Garrison Savannah in Barbados.

The following was produced by the Barbados Government Information Service.
