“Bring on the grass pitches”

GROW GRASS and groundsmen will pass the test in getting pitches fast.

That’s the prescription which former first-class cricketer-cum-curator Neil Phillips says is needed in preparation of pitches to give them bounce and a long, lasting life.

And the former Barbados fast-bowling all-rounder, who has been preparing pitches weekly for the past two decades in a full-time job, is urging the newly rebranded Cricket West Indies (CWI) to deploy him to teach the technique to groundsmen in the Caribbean.

“I would like to go through the Caribbean and get the guys up to mark and show them the techniques and the science behind getting pitches to be faster and bouncier,” Phillips told WEEKENDSPORT in an interview last Saturday at the Christ Church Foundation, where he has been groundsman for the past four years.
