GOVERNMENT IS NOT looking to make Barbados a police-run state, but a more proactive one, says Minister of Health Donville Inniss.
Inniss, making the statement during a church service to mark the opening of Road  Safety Month at the People’s Cathedral yesterday, expressed  his concern with motorists taking excess legal  and illegal substances and then using  the roads afterwards, leading sometimes  to fatal accidents.
The minister also alluded to “the burden” accidents placed on the health care system, particularly the Accident & Emergency Department at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH), and the pain many families suffered over lost  loved ones.
Inniss said the Ministry of Transport and Works was currently working  on amending the island’s Road Safety Act to include breathalyser testing, which he added was long overdue. (AH)
