The first pedestrian overpass to be constructed in Barbados is one step closer to completion.
The foot bridge of the $2.4 million overpass, stretching from the Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation to the opposite side by Parkinson Memorial School, is being installed this weekend by C.O. Williams Construction.
To facilitate this, the section of the ABC Highway between the Emancipation Statue and the Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic was closed from yesterday morning. It will be reopened at 8 p.m. today.
Visiting the site yesterday for an update on the project was Minister of Transport and Works John Boyce.
Indicating that the overpass was structured to accommodate pedestrians and the disabled in wheelchairs, ensuring all got from one side of the highway to the other safely, Boyce said he was happy with the progress report he had received from engineers on site.
He reiterated that the overpass, which should be accessible to the public by mid-December, was the “first for Barbados and the first of many to come”.
“It is a significant engineering installation for Barbados,” the minister said. (AH)
