HERE COMES Fast 5 Netball.
That is the chant coming from the Barbados Netball Association and its newly installed president Nisha Cummins.
In addressing the awards ceremony of the highly successful National Union of Public Workers Unity Fast 5 tournament, Cummins announced that the BNA would be staging a similar competition from March 5 to 15.
Speaking at NUPW headquarters, Cummins said the adoption of the rapidly spreading shortened format of the game was key for Barbados to remain relevant and in tune with the netball world.
She indicated that the Fast 5 tournament, which will precede the March 17 opening of the 2013 season, would provide critical warm-up for the players and the spectators with exciting prospects for the BNA gaining long desired sponsorship for their competitions.
NUPW president Walter Maloney signalled that the success of the inaugural Unity Fast 5 tournament, along with the spirit of the players and the enthusiasm of the spectators, would encourage the NUPW to make it an annual one.
While the night might have belonged to the players, coaches and officials, awards were also given to the volunteers with Wayne Linton and Michael Puckerin being rewarded for their assistance.
The Police Boys and Girls Club was also saluted for agreeing to host the tournament. Robin Garnes was warmly applauded as he was presented with a gift for giving over 40 years to the club and to netball and basketball in Barbados. (KB)
