ABOUT 200 “angry but civil” former Drainage Division workers turned up at the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW) for a closed-door meeting yesterday morning to vent concerns about empty pockets and lack of payments since they were terminated late last month.
Loud voices, some filled with emotion, could be heard coming from the room at intervals but things appeared to be peaceful when the meeting concluded and workers filed out just about two hours later.
NUPW general secretary Dennis Clarke told the media afterwards that they met with workers to discuss alternatives to help them in their current need.
He said they were seeking information from workers regarding unemployment benefits and notice of pay that were due to them.
“We are a little bit surprised given the letters – they brought the letters this time – to see that they should have had one month’s pay in lieu of notice,” Clarke said.
“This is in accordance with the letter of employment that they would have had.”
