LABOUR LEADER Sir Roy Trotman has cautioned Government not to allow a new giant revenue collecting agency to create the same levels of inefficiencies it was designed to remove and to be wary of birthing super public servants with infamous “A Team” salaries.
His warnings came yesterday during debate in the Senate on the Barbados Revenue Authority (Bill) approved in the House of Assembly Tuesday night.
The legislation would effect the merger of key agencies: Inland Revenue, Land Tax, Customs & Excise and the VAT Office.
Sir Roy, retiring general secretary of the Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU), said it would give “critical support” to the bill but wondered how “we are properly able to deal with the monolithic being, this juggernaut, and how we are going to see that effectively being addressed vis-a-vis smaller satellites that could perhaps be considered to be much more efficient”.
