Barbados players Igna Smart and Donald Leacock steered their four-ball team to victory when the Barbados Golf Association (BGA) hosted its annual Corporate Golf Tournament at the Barbados Golf Club (BGC) at Durants.
Playing in good conditions last Saturday, Smart and Leacock teamed up with Colin Brewer and Clenell Goodman to win the tournament while staving off challenges from other competitive foursomes.
The winners, representing the BGC team, shot 16-under-par , which was five strokes better than their nearest rivals – the Deloitte & Touche team, which included Gordon Walker, Eric Layne, Peter Downes and Dr Ramesh Jonnagaladda.
The second-placed team shot 11-under and edged the third place finishers on the count-back system. Players comprising the third placed Clarke Gittens & Farmer team, who also shot 11-under, were Chris Hoad, Emir Uzunoic, Bruce Boucaud and Brett Clarke.
Nineteen four-member teams, all sponsored by corporate entities, took part in the tournament, which is staged annually to raise funds to assist the junior national team in competing in the Caribbean Junior Golf Championships.
Among other sponsors of teams in the corporate tournament were Banks Holdings, Simpson Motors, Sandy Lane, RBC Royal Bank, Sagicor, Harris Paints, the Steakhouse Grill, Trident Insurance, Barbados Light &Power, Roberts Manufacturing and Total golf.
This year, the regional junior championships are being staged in Puerto Rico from July 27 to August 2 and Barbados will be represented by a six-member team. They are captain Spencer Smith, Xavier Wiggins, Chris Cobley, Iz Hustler, Joshua Jones, Christian Mason and coach Bobby Edghill. BGA president Cally Boyea thanked all companies and indivuals for supporting the
fund-raising event and said the future of the sport depended on the participation of juniors and the creation of solid programmes to encourage their involvement.
The young players named to the Barbados team also took part in the tournament. Boyea also thanked veteran coach Denis Foster for agreeing to work with them in their preparation for the regional championships. (BB)
