His World War II medal is pinned proudly to the chest of his jacket, while the patch signifying his membership in the Barbados Legion adorns the pocket.
And yesterday, 96-year-old war veteran Herman Adams was once again in the spotlight as 30 members of the Barbados Regiment surrounded his home and cleaned it up.
When they were finished, the soil in the garden beds had been denuded of their weeds; the overgrown trees had been trimmed; the layers of leaves from the yard had been removed and the inside of the house at Christ Church, had been made spic and span.
Hanging on the door in the hot morning air was the dark-coloured jacket with its array of medals and pins.
Colour Sergeant Sherla Codrington, one of the Barbados Defence Force officers who coordinated the outreach effort, revealed a company of 30 soldiers representing three units took part in the clean-up.
“We chose the senior citizen’s home so the public could see the softer side of the Barbados Defence Force, instead of that rough side all the time, and to show that we care and that we also give back,” Codrington explained.
