Youth crime a concern

THE RECENT SPATE of murders involving the island’s youth is an area of concern for the National Council on Substance Abuse (NCSA).

As it launched its camp Project S.O.F.T today, community programme coordinator and camp director Makeada Bourne said the Psychiatric Hospital and the Royal Barbados Police Force are also reporting that many young people are involved in either drug use or trafficking.

Bourne said the transitional camp for young boys and girls moving from primary to secondary school will deal with issues such as conflict resolution, self-esteem, drug education and how to stay drug free, peer pressure, preserving the environment and social graces.

She said the programme targets the children at that age so they can be given the skills they need to navigate in their new environment and make positive decisions.

The camp is taking place at the Valley Resource Centre. (LK)
