GOVERNMENT IS making sure illegal firearms cannot be smuggled through the post office.

Attorney General and Minister of Home Affairs Adriel Brathwaite said the process had already begun.

“How do we ensure the post office is not used as a conduit for contraband, especially illegal firearms? This is an area we are going to pay particular attention to; we will make training available to as many officers as possible so they can recognise all parts of a firearm.

“We have done a programme and you will be hearing us very soon in terms of how we can assist in additional training in the area of security,” he said.

The Attorney General was speaking at the opening ceremony for the Caribbean Postal Training Centre, located in the General Post Office, Cheapside, The City. It is the first such centre in the Caribbean and will facilitate the training of people from across the region in various aspects of the postal service.

Director of Developmental Co-operation in the Universal Postal Union (UPU) Abdel Ilah Bousseta said the centre was a collaboration between the UPU, the Caribbean Postal Union and Government.

He said there was a relatively small number of post offices and postal workers in the Caribbean so training and resource sharing were priority. (CA)
